FREEZING RAIN POTENTIAL update

After going through much of the interpolated grid data from both the GFS and NAM 00z runs, a freezing rain event is still looking likely. Timing-wise, expect precipitation to begin Monday evening south of the River Valley and spread northward across our entire area into early Tuesday morning. All areas north of the River Valley along with higher terrain to the south stand a good chance of seeing a period of accumulating ice. The grid data contains liquid equivalent precipitation in six-hour increments. Presently, totals range from about a tenth of an inch to as much as .22", which is for Drake Field. This amount, should it all fall into a layer of atmosphere that is below freezing would amount to about a quarter of an inch of ice! As of now the temperature profile looks to be almost entirely below freezing at the surface through the event.

As we saw this past week, all it takes is a few one hundredths of ice to send cars spinning... and remember, bridges will freeze first before roads. Tuesday morning will likely pose the greatest threat to motorists. We'll be fine-tuning amounts over the next 24 hours.
