Sunday's Ice Potential

I just looked over the current model data, and Sunday is really looking like the worst day of the weekend. Benton, Cherokee, Adair, and Delaware counties will likely deal with ice all weekend; however, both NW AR and the River Valley will be blasted on Sunday with temperatures in the 20's and lower 30's along with a surge of heavy rainfall as a wave of low pressure moves overhead. Many spots could pick up over an inch of rain throughout Sunday afternoon, creating icing throughout the area. Roads, powerlines, and trees could be heavily impacted when it's all said and done by Sunday evening.

A dusting of light snow could occur on the back edge of the storm early Monday morning before we dry out for early next week.

For those of you following the trend in what some of the forecasting models have been putting out as far as precipitation goes, indeed, this last wave that looks to come through late Sunday afternoon through the evening hours is packing a wallop!

Unfortunately this latest data is back to supporting as much as 1.5” of ice for Fort Smith. As was talked about earlier, this present run of data at 0Z is more in accordance with the numerical solutions, as far as temps and precipitation goes, of the earlier 12Z model run. Bottom line…the temperature for Fort Smith will be oh so close to freezing! It could get messy.

I did notice the NAM does drop the frz line past Fort Smith for the Sunday event, It could be an ice rink for many of us come Sunday and parts of OK before then.

I took a look at 06 NAM, and if its right we wont see much of any ice.. but who really knows. It moves 0c line back NW, almost out of the viewing area.

It does appear for the time being the cold air has come to a halt from a Fayetteville to Vian/Gore line. The Fort Smith airport has actually climbed from 39 to 40 degrees the past few hours and even Rogers has seen a temperature climb from 30 to 32 degrees. The end result will be mainly a rain through tonight from Fayetteville to Sallisaw south and east including Fort Smith, Booneville, Mena and Poteau. South to southwest winds have returns out ahead of the next wave and the ozarks are trapping the deeper cold air to its north and west. Round 2 for northwest Benton county along with Muskogee, western Haskell and western Latimer, Delware and western Adair counties will see on and off freezing rain with pockets of rain at times. Later on tonight as colder air beging to wrap around the system a larger area of heavier precipiation will form off to our west-south-west and begin to affect the area. This time the freezing line will lie south of Fayetteville to 15 miles on either side of Fort Smith. Look for a new wx blog post shortly to outline my latest thinking on this winter storm.
