Funnel or Fake?




As Ted mentioned in his post below, thunderstorms with strong downdrafts moved throughout the area on Friday. With a dry layer aloft, evaporational cooling allowed for strong winds to develop out of these storms; moreover, some of those downdrafts made for some ominous looking pictures.


This picture above was thought to be a funnel cloud, however, look closely, you'll notice it is detached from the cloud base. Downdraft winds tend to make the cloud base ragged. These types of clouds are often called "scud". Sometimes, these scud clouds can look like tornadoes or funnels, creating tricks for the untrained eye.
