Major Model Changes.....Freezing Rain?

We're still looking warm for Saturday! I want to get that out before I mention colder temperatures and freezing rain. As Patrick mentioned in his blog below, temperatures could climb into the upper 60s and lower 70s by Saturday afternoon; however, the warmth will be short lived, as another cold front will usher in colder air by Sunday.

With the trough holding to our west, an overrunning situation could develop for late Sunday night into Monday morning. Overrunning occurs when warm air just above the surface travels over a shallow freezing air mass at the surface. Precipitation will fall as rain above the shallow cold layer, but when that rain comes in contact with an object that's at or below 32 degrees, freezing rain could occur.

Notice the southerly winds and warming temperatures at 850 mb. This is a classic example of overrunning just above the surface.

At the surface, the GFS is picking up on that shallow cold air mass across NE OK and NW AR, and that's where the freezing rain would occur. We're still several days away, but we will watch this winter weather potential very closely for you.
