Freezing Rain Possible...

Talk about up and down temperatures for this week! Tuesday we'll see highs climbing some 10 to 15 degrees above average as compressional heating develops off the Rockies. Westerly flow aloft will create this warming feature on Tuesday afternoon. Compressional heating is the warming of air molecules using the dry adiabatic lapse rate. This says that a dry parcel of air warms at a rate of 5.5 degrees every 1,000 ft as it descends to the surface. Pressure increases as the flow comes of the Rockies, so the air molecules warm quickly; however, this warmth will be short lived, as colder temperatures return toward the middle of the week.

Temperatures will fall Wednesday behind a frontal boundary that could set the stage for some light precipitation by Thursday morning. Temperatures across NE OK and NW AR by Thursday morning may hover at or slightly below freezing, so patchy areas of freezing rain and drizzle are in the forecast for Thursday morning north of I-40. Computer models are spitting out a few tenths of an inch, so precipitation is expected to be on the light side. We'll watch this closely!

Do clipper system's like were seeing right now over the Ohio Valley ever occur in NW Arkansas? They are getting some serious snow over there. Im not sure I've ever seen that kind of clipper system here, maybe light, but not like that.

Let's hope we don't get any more ice! Thanks to all you terrific weather men who work so hard to give us good forecasts. You are greatly appreciated!

Here's and update on the freezing rain potential...

Temperatures are still forecast north of I-40 to be at or below freezing by Thursday morning. Light areas of freezing rain and drizzle are possible. Precipitation amounts are only forecast to be a few one hundreths of an inch, so only minor icing is forecast to occur. Some bridges and overpasses may have isolated slick spots, along with other exposed surfaces. Allow some extra time Thursday morning, especially if you park a car outdoors. You may need to thaw it out before getting on the roads.

Light rain throughout the River Valley will be common Thursday morning; however, temperatures should remain above freezing, so no icing problems are expected. More updates to come!

Ann, you are very kind, and we appreciate your support. We will see clipper systems come through; however, we're typically dry, so no major precip tends to break out. We'll see fast moving frontal boundary's with reinforcing shots of cold air and clouds.

We're still on for the chance for freezing rain/drizzle north of I-40 for Thursday morning. No major ice accumulations, but some isolated slick spots may be an issue. Check in on the morning show for the latest.
