Some Chilly Air...First Major Freeze

November has started out on a very balmy note. Temperatures on Sunday afternoon have crested into the 70s! Monday looks to be mild as well, but don't expect this warmth to last into Tuesday.

This is an 850 mb chart at around 5,000 ft. This gives a meteorologist a good handle on cold or warm air trends in the forecast. Take a look at the 850 mb picture for Monday afternoon pictured below. The coldest of the air will remain across Missouri during the day on Monday; however, we'll expect the cold front to arrive during the late afternoon and early evening, dropping temperatures significantly for Monday night into Tuesday.

As a forecaster I like to think of a cold air mass as syrup. Syrup is slow, and not easy to remove, and that's the way the atmosphere works. It's very atypical to see strong cold air advection, and then 24 hours later seeing warm temperatures again. Look at the 850 temperatures by Tuesday evening. These 850 temperatures indicate highs in the 50s for Tuesday.

Most importantly will be the chance for a hard freeze north of I-40 by Wednesday morning. Temperatures may even hover around freezing across the River Valley as well. Regardless, both Tuesday and Wednesday look rather cool, and we'll keep a watch on the cold weather coming from the north.
