Coming In Like a Lion.....ROARING!
We're only 5 days in this early month of March, and it's already been rip roaring' over the last couple of days. Major temperature swings and snowfall have stolen the headlines so far, but more could be on the way! Here's a recap of some of the snow totals from yesterday. The greatest snow accumulations occurred south due to: the track of the low, and the orographic lift created by the mountains.
More snow could be on the way for Friday. The 0Z NAM is hinting at another system to move our direction for late Thursday night into Friday, but caution needs to be taken with the NAM. The NAM hasn't been real trustworthy this winter; we'll look at the GFS later for more guidance to paint the entire picture. Let's see what the NAM's painting!
Notice the 500 mb shortwave that crosses SE OK by Friday morning. This will create strong lift and likely produce precipitation. Do you notice the X's on this map? These are known as speed max's, and they correlate with rising air from the surface.
The 0 degree isotherm is completely south of our area at 5,000 feet aloft. This shows that the column is most likely able to support frozen precipitation; it's important to note that the mountainous areas that are over 2,000 feet would see the best snow accumulations.
The NAM bombs out the precipitation where those speed max's occur. My guess is that there will be a frontal boundary setting up across SE OK and SW AR, and the boundary will provide the focus for heavy snowfall. If this solution where to come true, we're looking at another heavy snow event for the Ouachitas! More to come!
