TORNADO FACTS

You may have heard that tornadoes only happen in the spring or that mountains block tornadoes, keeping a town below safe. Perhaps you've even heard that tornadoes won't cross a river. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security by any of these myths!
  • First and foremost, tornadoes can happen any time of the year as we've recently seen.
  • Secondly, significant tornadoes have crossed nearly every major river east of the continental divide as well as high terrain nation-wide, including, the Appalachians, Rockies and Sierra Nevada.
  • The Salt Lake City Tornado of August 11, 1999 crossed a canyon, descending down one side and rising up the other!
  • An F4 tornado even crossed the divide in Yellowstone National Park back in 1987

These are just a few things to keep in mind to stay safe.
